Film festivals are a key part of the Catalan cinematographic sector; a platform for the dissemination of unpublished, plural and diverse cinema and a generator of reflection and collective experiences. We want to review the festivals that have been a great success so far:
On March 7, the 10th edition of the Americana Film Festival was inaugurated. Since 2014, this festival has brought to Barcelona a sample of the international prestige of independent cinema from the United States at the hands of its directors and producers. Through screenings of short and long films of all genres and parallel activities for young and old, Americana brings us closer to all those North American productions that are not shown in commercial theatres. This year they have enjoyed a large influx of spectators, managing to put up the “Sold Out” poster in different sessions. In addition, we were able to enjoy the presence of Todd Solondz, director of films such as Happiness or Wiener-dog.
Later, from March 15 to 19, we were able to enjoy the Brain Film Fest – Solé Tura Award in the city of Barcelona; an international film festival about the brain promoted by the Pasqual Maragall Foundation and co-organized by Minimal Films. Through audiovisual creation and scientific dissemination, it shows the public, in a close way, the multifaceted reality of the brain, from its capacities to its diseases and conditions. The last films of Werner Herzog and Gerardo Herrero were screened at this festival.
From March 22 to 26, the Moritz Feed Dog took place, and since its creation in 2015, fashion has been the central axis of its programming. Edition after edition, the festival brings us closer to the richness and complexity of a cultural phenomenon in constant transformation. Fashion as a reflection of society and its idiosyncrasies is the protagonist of the productions and activities promoted by each edition of Moritz Feed Dog.
But not all of them are past festivals. You still have time to enjoy the D’A Festival Cine Barcelona, an essential cultural event of the Barcelona spring. Since 2011, the D’A Film Festival has invited us to enjoy a careful program of the best productions that can be seen at national and international festivals. Directors, Talents and A Collective Impulse are some of the sections of the festival that bring together the most current national and international independent cinema, from directors of reference and also first works by filmmakers to be discovered. In addition to the screenings, the D’A proposes different activities each year, such as a Professional Conference that brings together different agents of the sector, or proposals such as the Sala Jove, which brings auteur cinema closer to the younger audience with different sessions in which this one takes the chair and the floor.
All these festivals have been a success and a mark of quality in terms of the cinema they have shown in their sessions. We continue to look forward to more festivals and focus our attention on upcoming festivals such as DOCS Barcelona or the Mostra Internacional de Films de Dones that will open soon!
